So how many people knew it was Strawberry Shortcake Day today? Well today I spent over an hour in my eye doctor's office waiting for my eyes to be dilated for a checkup. About 10 patients were all crowded in together like sardines in a little back office waiting for the doctor to see us and as I sat there slowly losing my vision clarity I was listening to the tv over me. So apparently today is Strawberry Shortcake Day, and I didn't even know there was such a day to begin with! It made me realize that today I would talk about one of my favorite little treats, strawberries. I went online to find a recipe for strawberry shortcake and here we go.
Strawberry Shortcake
Shortcakes:
1 & 3/4 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons aluminum-free baking powder
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/8 cup sugar
1/4 cup butter, softened
1/4 cup sour cream
1/4 cup milk
Zest of 1 lemon
Berries:
2 quarts strawberries, hulled, chopped
2 tablespoons sugar
Cream:
1 pint heavy cream
4 tablespoons confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Shortcakes: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
Place the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar into a large mixing bowl. With a fork, mix in the butter and the sour cream until the mixture is crumbly. Stir in the milk and lemon zest.
Place the dough onto the prepared baking sheet, and knead just until it comes together. Pat into a rectangle a half-inch high, and cut into 6 portions. Separate the portions, then bake the shortcakes for 15 minutes until golden. Let cool.
And now to the part of my blog I enjoy writing the most... picking out the perfumes in my closet that smell deliciously of strawberries. I'm going to speak about three today.
The one I find smells the most like strawberries to me and has the greatest lasting power and sillage is none other then Sarah Jessica Parker SJP NYC. SJP consists of vibrant notes of wild red strawberries, Italian mandarin, white osmanthus, gardenia, honeysuckle, mimosa, rum flavor, sandalwood and creamy musk to entice your senses. Before I bought this fragrance I tested it out in my local drugstrore. When I went to the counter to purchase my makeup the cashier raved at how good I smelled, and that was from one tiny spritz at the fragrance counter. So lo and behold I went and bought this treasure not too long after. I find the scent on the dry down smells a lot like Nina by Nina Ricci, also a fabulous perfume, but I like SJP better. The strawberries in the top notes are enticing and its the kind of fragrance you ladies will never get enough of.
The next is Kylie Minogue Showtime. I only have the EDT version but I have read reviews on the EDP version and supposedly its the EDP version that is spend-worthy. The EDT is delicious but I find the fragrance doesn't last as long as I want it to. It's just difficult to locate the EDP. The EDT I have was very reasonable in price and if you don't mind reapplying all day, it is quite a treat. Infact when I first spray this on I feel I have become Strawberry Shortcake herself, especially upon first spray. Showtime by Kylie Minogue is created in cooperation with the perfumer Vincent Schaller. It is a sensual fragrance which attracts like a magnet with its oriental floral touches. It opens with notes of cranberry, strawberry and black currant. The heart brings the harmony of heliotrope and licorice, while the base brings notes of toffy and candies, with accords of exotic woods and vetiver.
Lastly, I was surprised to find what other perfume in my closet contained the note of strawberries. Ed Hardy for Women opens with explosive notes of tropical mango, wild strawberries and red grapefruit. The heart introduces mystic black freesia, while the base follows with amber and rose accords. I own Ed Hardy for Women and one of her newer scents Love Luck which I am actually wearing today. I enjoy wearing Ed Hardy for Women in the summer on my way to the beach because it smells like a strawberry tropical smoothie and what woman doesn't enjoy a fruity smoothie on a hot day?
So there is my recommendations today for fragrances that contain strawberry notes. I think SJP NYC is absolutely my favorite but Showtime and Ed Hardy for Women definetely deserve my praises as well. So there you are for today. Don't forget to make a strawberry shortcake tonight if you really want to appreciate June 14th. :O)
